trusting {too much}

sunday night I was up late. I worked on my site for 5 hours straight. I was really tired when I went to bed at 1:40 a.m.

at 3:15 stewart, our chocolate lab, was barking crazy downstairs. then sophie started in. I am still not sure where santos was.

I came down and hushed them afraid they'd wake cole and well, maybe, bry. neither woke.

I went back to bed.

I woke at 8 a.m. and came downstairs to find one of our kitchen windows wide open.

I had left a removeable screen in it to enjoy the fall air. being naive, I thought it must have fallen out.

I went outside only to discover the screen was not there. I went to my neighbor's house and told him I thought we had been vandalized.

seconds later I realized our neighbor (with whom we share the other side of our house/double with) had been. he had broken in her basement window and invaded her home.

it sent chills down my back as I looked above our kitchen window to see my son's bedroom.

my dogs, thank god for my dogs. they scared away whomever had tried to enter our home.

days later I am still asking myself, what if I had shut the window, would he have broken our basement window too and entered our home? what would my dogs have done to him? what would he have done to them? or possibly to cole? or to us? it is unnerving.

I am writing this post to you to please warn you to not be like me. please do not trust others as much as you want. because I did and I still want to.

day two:
a man appears at our door. I almost waved him away but I didn't want him to think I was judging him. I opened the door. he seemed like such a nice man. he was from a security company & was notified by the police department of the local break-ins.

what I didn't know at that time is that I was staring our potential intruder in the face. here I was trusting this man and giving him information I should not have. I am an idiot. a trusting idiot.

we found out later that evening that this van of men go around posing as employees of a security company. the are really seeing what you have in your home so they can later come back. if you will be as naive as me, you will give them the information they want.

this has been a wake up call for me. a big wake up call. I can no longer live in my bubble believing the world is as it was when laura ingalls was growing up.

this world is much different. a world where security systems and blinds covering every window is essential.

as I was cleaning cole's bottles this evening, I began wondering, is he watching me? does he know I am here now?

so tomorrow I am going to buy some lovely material to cover all of those windows as well and to hopefully find my missing wooden apple from my kitchen window (trying to add some humor to this post!).

be safe, my friends, please be safe.

My goodness! I got chills reading this! I'm so glad you all are ok! Praying that your family remains safe! It's a shame that we have to live in fear of dishonest people!

This is so awful! This has happened to me twice. The positive outcome is that it has taught me to not be so trusting and to be very alert of my surroundings. Sad but true.

Glad that everyone is safe. And kudos to your dogs!!

Oh tracey, I'm so sorry this happened!!! Thank God for the dogs. Sometimes Maxi's barking sends me to the moon, but I wouldn't trade it.
So glad you are safe. XOXO

what a frightening story. A good lesson for us all. It's nice to have dogs, I think they can be a great deaterent. On a lighter note, I love the dishtowel hanging on your stove, the one with the kitchen utensils. Could you tell me where you got it? It would go perfectly in my kitchen!

That is so awful and scary. I once walked up from the basement to see a man standing in my living room! At the time my two little children were upstairs napping...I had just come in and put them up there...I had almost just set them up on the sofa. It was a terrible day. Your mind can go crazy with the "what ifs".
I hope you are feeling better.
